I'm reading Fred Vargas. Although it may appear by name, is an author (in female author) writes French thriller. His works, well known, give a kind of twist to the regular police, to introduce elements that until now we were strangers. Many of them are taken from the best-seller to use: and medieval books to be deciphered, the hidden mysteries sometimes for centuries, with a touch key scholar ...
On this basis, it constructs enigmas Vargas quite entertaining, to be fair. Entertaining and original, the best style of the old and good (and unfairly marginalized) novels kiosk. In the must, I think Vargas style is simply functional, not too literary, and certainly in no time manages to create the "climate", the "atmosphere" of disappointed romanticism own in the great crime novels of Chandler, Hammett, Mac Donald or Hardley Chase ... Neither the environment nor, indeed, anywhere else. After a few pages, what happens with so many novels based only on the mystery and intrigue that the reader is passing and passing leaves, stopping only in the opening paragraphs, a diagonal reading says, until finally finding the murderer's name and explanation to the fact, eg , that desecrate graves in cemeteries.
But I did not want Vargas to speak here as both the impression that has led me to meet, in his latest novel, The third virgin , apparently the best-selling worldwide, with a character that is expressed continuously Alexandrine verse. Every time he opens his mouth, paragraphs come out of it rhymed, and if people are surprised about his speech, said that is a peculiarity.
The book's back cover praises much the figure of this character who speaks in verse, and critical extracts are included with the book, both France Soir, as the Financial Times as the Herald Tribune, as Taxi The Gazette, in all characters speak solidÃsimos and eccentricities of genius.
Well, the fact is that to me, years ago came up with a similar character in a novel, a guy who continually speak in verse. I checked the idea with my friend Paco.
"That is bullshit.
My friend Paco is a very serious guy. I always tell, in fact:
-Paco, you're a serious guy.
"Affirmative," he responds.
So, as I like enough to his opinion, I also asked a verdict on the character my friend Marcelino versificante. And his answer was:
"That is utterly stupid.
- Are you sure?
"Yeah, sure. And do not ask me the favor of more crap.
So, finally, I decided not to proceed with that character, indeed, decided to close the novel was going to be the protagonist. And now, lo and behold I find a character versificante praise from top to bottom of the globe and major newspapers. What to do about this?, I wonder. Do I stop reading Fred Vargas?, Have you stopped hanging out with my friends?
Again I faced with my doubts.
